Stages of Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is classified into different stages according to the size of the tumor and whether the cancer has metastasized. Knowledge about the stage will aid the doctor in selecting an appropriate treatment plan.

Prostate Cancer

Stage 1 Prostate Cancer

The cancer is relatively small in size and localized within the prostate. The patient rarely experiences any symptoms at this stage of development.

Stage 2 Prostate Cancer

There is an increased size of cancer, but it remains confined within the prostate. Diagnosis in this phase will greatly contribute to better treatment results.

Stage 3 Prostate Cancer

The tumor has spread beyond the prostate and invaded adjacent organs. Treatment could be either surgical, hormonal, radiation, or any combination of these.

Stage 4 Prostate Cancer

The cancer has metastasized and spread beyond the area where it first developed and is now present in nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body, such as the bones, liver, or lungs.

Early Detection Improves Treatment Success

Many prostate cancers grow slowly; screening decisions should balance the benefits of early detection with the risks of overdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment which may involve PSA blood test & DRE.
