Robotic Lung Surgery

Robotic thoracic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery used in thoracic procedures for some lung cancer cases. Also called robotic-assisted thoracic surgery, it can be used to remove diseased lung tissue and possibly surrounding lymph nodes. First, a small 3D high-definition camera is placed through one of the cuts (incisions) to provide a view of the inside of the chest cavity. The magnified view and wristed instruments allow the surgeon to make precise, controlled movements to remove lung tissue without having to make larger incisions to open up the chest or spread the ribs.

Robotic Thymectomy

A robotic thymectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes the thymus gland using a robot. It offers several benefits, including:

Faster recovery: Patients recover faster and have a shorter hospital stay
Better cosmetic results: The procedure results in better cosmetic outcomes
Low postoperative morbidity: The procedure has low postoperative morbidity

A robotic thymectomy may be recommended for patients with:

A small cancer of the thymus (thymoma)
Myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune condition that causes muscle weakness

Carcinoid Tumors

These are rare tumors that originate within the lung and airway system which have a very good prognosis if treated well. We offer Sleeve resection and Lung preserving surgery using Robotics for these patients. Our outcomes are one of the best in the country for these tumors.

VATS Lobectomy

A video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that removes a lobe of the lung that contains cancer cells.

Chemotherapy

This is a treatment given through the veins to eliminate cancer cells that may have escaped into the bloodstream and spread to other parts of the body, which is given during the following three treatment stages:

Neoadjuvant: Patients undergo chemotherapy with or without immunotherapy prior to surgery or radiation to minimize the cancer spread.
Adjuvant: Patients undergo chemotherapy with or without immunotherapy after surgery to eliminate the remaining cancer cells.
Palliative chemotherapy: Patients undergo chemo during the advanced phase i.e., in Stage IV to relieve them of symptoms and improve their condition.

Radiation therapy

Radiation treatments are a form of therapy that uses photons to kill cancer cells. In lung cancer the following types are commonly used:

SBRT: Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy is used in early lung cancer as an alternative to surgery. In this treatment, high dose of focused radiation is used to completely eradicate tumors.
EBRT: External Beam Radiotherapy is primarily used in locally advanced lung cancer, where surgery is not possible. Treatments are usually completed within a month.
Palliative RT: It is performed when the lung cancer has metastasized to the bones, brain or adrenal glands.

Targeted therapy

This therapy has revolutionized the treatment of advanced lung cancer, where drugs specifically “target’ cancer cells and relatively spare other cells, this has changed the perspective of lung cancer treatments.

Immunotherapy

Improvements in drugs have helped with the invention of immune-boosting drugs, which stimulate the body’s immune mechanisms to fight and kill cancer cells. It is an exciting concept that changes the perspective of lung cancer management.

After sub-specialty training in Thoracic Oncology at top institutions in the country and the world, he has established and leads the Thoracic Oncology Department at Thangam Cancer Center.

Dr. Karthick Rajamanickam’s main scope of interest is in the clinical fields of Lung, Gynecological oncology and Gastro-Intestinal oncology with special interest in Liver malignancies. He has special interest in the clinical skills of Brachytherapy. After spending the time at Tata Hospital in Mumbai, and have developed special interest in Sterotactic Body Irradiation and Sterotactic Radio-Surgery.
