Cardio-Pulmonary Laboratory at Thangam Hospital

At Thangam Hospital, Namakkal, our Cardio-Pulmonary Laboratory is equipped with the latest technology to assess cardiovascular and respiratory performance with precision. These diagnostic tests help evaluate functional capacity, detect underlying conditions, and guide treatment plans

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET)

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) is a sophisticated diagnostic tool that studies how the heart, lungs, and muscles respond to physical stress. It is used to:

  • Evaluate exercise intolerance and unexplained breathlessness
  • Assess functional capacity and cardiopulmonary fitness
  • Aid in preoperative risk assessment for cardiothoracic surgeries

During the test, patients walk or jog on a treadmill or cycle on a bicycle ergometer, while their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing patterns, and oxygen consumption are closely monitored.

CPET provides valuable insights into conditions like heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other exercise-induced symptoms.

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT) with DLCO

Our lab also conducts Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs), including DLCO (Diffusing Capacity of the Lung for Carbon Monoxide), to evaluate lung efficiency and gas exchange.

Spirometry: Measures airflow and lung volume, helping diagnose obstructive and restrictive lung diseases

DLCO Test: Assesses how effectively oxygen is transferred from the lungs into the bloodstream

DLCO is particularly useful in detecting and monitoring:

  • Interstitial lung diseases
  • Pulmonary vascular diseases
  • COPD and emphysema
  • Preoperative respiratory assessment

The test uses carbon monoxide (CO) due to its strong binding with hemoglobin, mimicking the oxygen transfer process without being affected by metabolic factors.

Treadmill Stress Test (TMT)

Our Treadmill Stress Test helps assess cardiac function under physical exertion. This non-invasive test is used to:

  • Detect coronary artery disease
  • Evaluate exercise-induced arrhythmias
  • Monitor patients with known heart conditions
  • Guide fitness and recovery plans post-cardiac events

During the test, patients exercise on a treadmill while we monitor ECG (electrocardiography), heart rate, and blood pressure to identify any abnormal responses.

If you’re experiencing breathlessness, chest discomfort during activity, or preparing for a major surgery, talk to our specialists about cardio-pulmonary testing at Thangam Hospital. Early diagnosis leads to better outcomes.
